Silverfish are fast moving, wingless insects that grow up to 15mm. They are covered with silvery scales that are easily detached. Silverfish are sometimes known as “bristletails” due to the three slender “antenna-like” appendages from their abdomen. Females lay 1-3 eggs in a batch. The young resemble small adults and may reach adulthood in 3-4 months and live for 3-4 years.
Like so many other insects, silverfish are nocturnal and during the day hide in cracks and crevices, or amongst cardboard and paper. They like clutter, and will feed on paper (including wallpaper and books), fabrics and clothing, and almost anything containing starches or glues.
Silverfish like high humidity or damp as they need moisture to survive. They prefer locations that are rarely disturbed such as roof voids, wardrobes and stored cartons. For these reasons the full extent of infestations may often go undetected.
